Elsewhere Before Dawn
A city before morning belongs to no one. From Times Square to unfamiliar roads, these photographs look for the brief interval when a famous place loses its performance and becomes quiet.
Travel changes the speed of looking. Places known through other photographs become unfamiliar when encountered late at night, before opening, or between crowds. Bright signs, distant monuments, winter streets, and roadside light are treated as fragments rather than proof of arrival.
The photographs in this chapter remain attentive to that temporary distance. They do not attempt to summarize a city or journey. Instead, they hold isolated moments when public images fall away and a place can be seen without its usual performance.
